Hi Kevin -
ReplyDeleteStill looking for your video after asking for feedback. I applaud you asking.
Kevin, a guard (point or shooting) is looked to as a leader by teammates and coaches, guards have a unique perspective of the game because of your position on the court.
Kevin, I watched your videos. You should never play down to the level of your teammates or opponents. Always dictate the pace of the game.
Learn to read the eyes of your opponent. When you know where and when he's looking you can backdoor to your heart's content. A backdoor is not always a scoring opportunity for you. A backdoor can set you up to pick for a teammate too. If you consistently backdoor your defender will have to take himself out of the flow of the game to pay attention strictly to you. That unclogs the interior for your teammates and, since you can see what's going on and your defender can't, you can fake him out his shoes all game long.
Always work hard and be the best conditioned athlete on the floor. You cannot always control everything but you can control your own conditioning. If you get drafted as a bench player and you make practice unbearable for the starters, because of your work ethic, you will get extra attention from the coaching staff. It's amazing how much more prepared you feel when conditioning is not an issue.
I'm not sayin' your not well conditioned, I'm just sayin' I doubt you can go ALL-OUT for an entire quarter, let alone going all out for an entire playoff game.
And right now while you're looking for a slot on a team, every game should feel like a playoff game to you.
All The Best Young Man,
Coach 'Dave' Jones
